Harrison County, Indiana Overview

Harrison County, Indiana is located in Southern Indiana along the banks of the Ohio River and is almost due west from Louisville, Kentucky on I-64. Harrison County's largest city, Corydon, is also the county seat and was at one time the state capital.  Harrison County has a diverse economic base with strong employment in both farming and manufacturing.  As of 2009, however, the county's largest employer is the Horseshoe Southern Indiana casino.

Harrison County is home to three public school districts each of which operate independently from the others:  Southern Harrison Community Schools, North Harrison Community Schools, and Lanesville Community Schools.  The county is also home to a number of prominent parochial schools including St. Joseph School, Trinity Christian and Corydon Christian Academy in Corydon and St. John Lutheran south of Lanesville.

The western part of Harrison County is preserved as Harrison-Crawford State Forest.  The county also has extensive cave systems including the famous Squire Boone Caverns (named for Squire Boone, a brother to Daniel, who was one of the first settlers to pass through the county).
